Scotland’s First Oyster Festival

Stranraer, in South West Scotland, is stunningly situated, around the sweeping bay at the head of Loch Ryan with beautiful views to distant Ailsa Craig, and beyond to the Irish Sea.

The Stranraer Oyster Festival 2017 was inspired by the annual September harvesting of Loch Ryan’s unique Scottish native oysters and was initiated by The Stranraer Development Trust.  For more information visit Stranraer Oyster Festival

Stranraer businessman and Trust chairman Romano Petrucci extends a warm welcome to all, inviting everyone to come to Stranraer from the 15th – 17th  September and have a truly fabulous weekend.  He says:

“We wanted to devise a festival that would involve and inspire our whole town, while creating a late summer tourism highlight to attract and welcome visitors to Stranraer.  Food tourism is one of the fastest growing tourism sectors in the UK.  Stranraer’s heritage means the town is perfectly placed to capitalise on this growing interest in themed food festivals.  By organising a festival that showcases the stunning beauty of Loch Ryan, its picturesque harbour and marina, the unique seafood that we harvest from the Loch and the warmth of the people of Stranraer we are looking forward to showing off our beautiful town to the world.

“Oysters might be considered a luxury food, but oyster festivals are not elitist.  Oyster festivals take the oyster as a focal point and then create a celebration of local food and local culture involving everyone in the local community who wants to take part, volunteer or just come along. That’s what we’ve done with this new festival, and for visitors who don’t want to try a Loch Ryan Oyster (come on we dare you!) we’ll have plenty of ice cream in wafer and chocolate ‘oyster shells,’ for people to indulge in a vintage seaside favourite!

“We look forward to seeing you in Stranraer.”

Romano Petrucci

It’s that time again!

Our town centre is once again looking lovely, bright and colourful with our summer plants.

We’ve got even more planters arriving soon.  We want the town to look fabulous its 400th Royal Burgh anniversary celebrations and of course for the Stranraer Oyster Festival.

Many thanks to our funders The Stafford Trust, Rotary Club, Glasgow Association of Galloway and Tesco Bags of Help.  Also big thanks to Michael from Soleburn Garden Centre, Leswalt who supplied the plants and donated his time to plant them all.

The dates are set…..

The first Stranraer Oyster Festival will take place over the weekend of the 15th/16th/17th September 2017.  We are busy planning all the different and activities that will take place.  We’ll keep you informed.

Stranraer Oyster Festival has a Logo!

The Board are delighted to unveil the new logo for the Stranraer Oyster Festival which has been designed as part of the consultation and initial development work for the Festival.

The next step is the finalisation of the Business Plan/Blue Print for the Festival.  This document is being produced by Liz Ramsay and Lorna Young who have extensive experience in event planning particularly in the food and drink sector.  This plan will help the Board of Trustees and their project worker to deliver a successful Festival.
