Gardener

The Gardener will be a key member of the delivery team for the Moveable Feast project. The ideal candidate will be competent and reliable with general gardening skills.

Provide gardening support to the Moveable Feast Project
Watering, weeding, propagating new plants and seedlings, planting out and keeping the site tidy
Engage with participants, supporting their involvement in the project and developing their gardening skills
Consideration of production and sustainability methods
Undertake any other relevant tasks as required by the Community Growing Manager

Growing Community Manager

The Moveable Feast Project is an innovative community grassroots engagement project designed to support community resilience through sustainable food production in Stranraer.

Oversee all aspects of the delivery of the Moveable Feast Project.
Produce and update all project planning documents and calendars.
Oversee project budgets and ensure delivery within expenditure allocations
Secure, maintain and ensure compliance with all relevant insurances
Negotiate and secure any relevant permissions for ongoing activities/events
Set-up and manage / monitor the outputs and outcomes of the project
Maintain adequate project reporting records
Manage any contractor workers on the project

Stranraer Young Developers Cook Book Project

The SYD group began working with the Fed Up Café and the local academy to create a Stranraer cookbook in 2022.  Staff at the Fed Up Café helped the group to practice some fun, simple recipes to potentially include and we also involved the local academy who drew pictures of recipe ingredients, featured in the book. The group came up with a lot of the design ideas as well as the name of the cook book and it is now on sale at the Gateway to Galloway.

JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Youth Activities Sessional Worker
LOCATION: Stranraer Development Trust
RESPONSIBLE TO: Stranraer Development Trust Chairman
RATE OF PAY: 12phr
HOURS: 5 hours a week. Fixed position for 8 weeks commencing in autumn 2023, with the expectation that this will continue up to the end of May 2024.

DUTIES:
1) To work as part of a team to establish the needs and wishes of young people in Stranraer and to encourage their engagement with ongoing youth work programme
2) To assist with evening programmes based on issues important to local young people
3) To advise, support and offer encouragement to young people aged 10 – 25
4) To work with the other youth workers and any volunteers to provide a range of positive opportunities for young people
5) To promote the active participation of young people in the community
6) To support volunteers during youth work sessions when required

PERSON SPECIFICATION:
1) Ability to relate to and support young people
2) Ability to work effectively as part of a team
3) Ability to take a democratic and non-judgemental approach to working with young people.
4) Enthusiastic, team player, who has experience in working ‘on the ground’ in a youth work context
5) A good basic knowledge of youth work procedures.

Recruitment Opportunities – April 2022

Art & Engagement Officer

This is an opportunity for a motivated person to use their creativity to bring local people into the heart of regeneration initiatives in Stranraer. Initial community consultation has identified a desire for culture to play a key role in the future of the town through activity and animation of the town’s spaces. This role will help support development of a thriving cultural sector and a potential major capital project for the re-development of a derelict heritage building in the town centre. The Arts & Engagement Officer (AEO) will bring together existing groups and creative initiatives in the town. Working with a production budget and other stakeholders they will develop a programme of creative activity for the town that engages the wider community and supports the sustainable development of the local creative sector. This programme will act as a backdrop for a major consultation exercise to record need and demand for re-development of the site and inform the proposed end use.

The post will be based with the Stranraer Development Trust (SDT), a respected and successful Community Development Trust. The commission is also supported by DG Council (DGC) as a strategic partner in the regeneration of Stranraer and The Stove Network (TSN) a regional arts organisation with a national reputation in Creative Placemaking. DGC will support the post holder to work as part of a wider project team developing capital investment bids for Stranraer and to bring creativity and culture into the centre of these projects. TSN will guide the AEO in techniques of Creative Placemaking that have been developed regionally and nationally for the creative sector to engage local people in the future vison for their area and through this to create a network and opportunities for local creatives.

The post sits within the context of two national arts initiatives currently taking place in Stranraer – What We Do Now (Culture Collective) and Dandelion (Unboxed Festival), and, also a major capital project to develop a creative, culture and/or activity venue on the site of the former George Hotel in the town centre. The AEO will develop their own programme of creative projects in coordination with other initiatives and groups in the town (eg Stranraer Music Town, Stranraer Performance Collective, Millennium Centre and Sea Pyots) – this programme will support and inform the developing plans for the proposed cultural venue and public realm improvements.

The post is funded for an initial 12 months with potential that it will be continued if successful.

Salary £30,000 pro rata with option to opt into a pension.

Hours 25 per week.

Key Responsibilities
• Developing and delivering a creative programme in partnership with local stakeholders in and around Stranraer town centre.
• Developing and delivering creative community engagement projects that support and inform potential re-development projects for the town.
• Supporting the development of a multi-artform network of creative practitioners in Stranraer
• Setting up and programming a small ‘Project HQ’ (eg small empty shop unit or under used space) for the project that will help facilitate the aims of the project and serve as focus for
creative vibrancy for the town
• Working as part of a project team comprising SDT, DGC and TSN and other consultants involved in capital project development
• Working as part of Stranraer Development Trust team to support the charities wider aims and objectives
• Providing project monitoring and reports as required
• Managing project budget

Responsible To: Stranraer Development Trust Board of Trustees & Project Coordinator

Responsible For: Daily operations of Gateway to Galloway Centre including management of part time staff members and volunteers.

Job Purpose:

Stranraer Development Trust is a registered charity and was set up to achieve sustainable regeneration of the community of Stranraer addressing a range of economic, social, environmental and cultural issues that the town faces.  Gateway to Galloway Centre is a new and exciting way for SDT to deliver a first class customer service through various avenues whilst displaying a passion for the area and wealth of local knowledge.

Gateway to Galloway Visitor Centre and Community Hub

The Gateway to Galloway Visitor Centre and Community Hub opened on 2nd July 2021.

The centre is a place for tourists to come for information on what's going on in and around Stranraer, places to visit, stay, eat and drink. With a wide variety of local art and crafts for sale.

The centre also acts as a community hub, offering exhibition space for community groups and artists based in Stranraer, with access to free WIFI.
